RELIGIOUS HERITAGE | 61. CHURCH OF ST. MARY MAGDALENE

The Church of Santa Madalena de Grijó is dated and signed: MARTINHO Aº (Afonso) O FES ANO D 1680. Inside the church, a granite pedestal gives us another date - 1679. One probably indicates the start of construction and the other the end of the work. The church was under the tutelage of the Society of Jesus, which explains the iconography of the chancel altarpiece, in gilded woodwork from the second half of the 17th century. It was later torn apart by a Throne of the Blessed Sacrament and splendor from the Joanine period. On the side, this altarpiece has four aedicules with Jesuit iconography: on the left, a large board depicts St. Ignatius of Loyola, topped by a small painting of St. Joseph. On the right is St. Francis Xavier with the Child on his lap, surmounted by a representation of St. Francis of Assisi. In the single nave, on the right-hand side, there is a curious altar dedicated to Jesus with baroque carvings, flanked by panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
