RELIGIOUS HERITAGE | 51. CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF KINGS

This 17th century Church of Our Lady of Kings is considered a rare example in the Trás-os-Montes region.
Dating back to the second half of the 18th century, the Church of Our Lady of Kings is a historical and artistic treasure of excellence in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, having been classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2013.
Inside the church, the use of gilded and polychrome carvings to decorate the temple stands out. For example, the pulpit with baldachin, the confessionals, the windows, the triumphal arch and the altars.
The triumphal arch, covered in gilded woodwork, had two altars, one dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and the other depicting Calvary.
The ceiling of the central nave is made up of 55 wooden coffered ceilings painted with images of angels and saints. The chancel is also covered with wooden coffered ceilings painted on the side walls with Marian symbols and invocations and on the ceiling with motifs related to everyday life.
Also noteworthy is the Baroque crib from the second half of the 18th century in a cupboard on the Gospel side.
