GEODIVERSITY | 39. LITHOLOGICAL CONTACT IN VILA NOVA DA RAINHA

On the way to the village of Vila Nova Rainha, a road embankment shows the transition from schist to granite. The shales that can be seen here were displaced a few tens of kilometres from the position they occupied around 300 million years ago by the collision between the continent of Gondwana and the continent of Armorica. The granites, with their altered appearance, can be seen in greater detail at the Granite from Vila Nova da Rainha geosite (G2).
