GEODIVERSITY | 24. CASTRO ROUPAL SEDIMENTS

Near the village of Castro Roupal we can see poorly consolidated sediments, similar to those observed at the Vale da Porca Cenozoic Sediments geosite (G14). These sediments, visible on a road embankment, take us back to a period of time between 10 and 4 million years ago, when there were several rivers draining into the interior of the Iberian Peninsula. This outcrop, of excellent quality, allows us to determine the W-E direction of the current of one of these rivers, which crossed the territory of the Geopark. It is also possible to observe the cross-stratification in the belly of this river, with braided behavior and low sinuosity.
