GEODIVERSITY | 31. TALC FROM VALE DA PORCA

At this geosite you can feel the soft touch of talc on the rocks, in an open-air mine located next to the Azibo dam. Talc, a mineral known to the population as ‘talcum powder’, has a wide variety of applications, such as in the paper industry, in paints, fertilisers and ceramics. The talc explored here is found in a very particular type of rock, which originates in the interior of Planet Earth, at depths of more than 30 kilometres. In addition to this particularity, the rocks containing this mineral come from an ancient continent called Armorica.
