RELIGIOUS HERITAGE | 76. CHURCH OF SANTA MARTA

The parish church of Bornes, dedicated to Santa Marta, has Renaissance and Baroque architecture, including a gilded high altar and a National Baroque altarpiece.
The parish church of Bornes, located in the center of the town, probably dates back to the 16th century.
Inside, the high altar's Baroque carved altarpiece from the early third Johannine period, decorated with phytomorphic and vineyard elements, attributed to António de Sousa, stands out, as does the painting on the chancel ceiling, in wooden coffins depicting figures of saints, attributed to José António Rodrigues Bustamante. The image of Saint Martha sits on the central throne, flanked by paintings on boards depicting Saint Peter and Saint Paul. On the ceiling of the central nave are depictions of the Annunciation, the Resurrection of Lazarus, the Assumption of Mary and Our Lady of Fatima.
