GEODIVERSITY | 12. LAGOA GNEISSES

On the right bank of the River Sabor, very close to the village of Lagoa, stands a rock more than 500 million years old, the Lagoa Gneiss. It is a rock that bears witness to the existence of a small continent - Armorica, which predates the current continents. At a certain stage in the history of Planet Earth, this and other primitive continents collided and formed a mountain range, which later disappeared. The Lagoa Gneiss is distinguished by its elongated crystals, which are due to the high pressure and movement to which the rock has been subjected over time.
