GEODIVERSITY | 28. CENOZOIC SEDIMENTS OF VALE DA PORCA

Near the Azibo River, on a road slope, there are various types of poorly consolidated, reddish-coloured sediments, such as conglomerates, sands and clays. These sediments are the traces left by a river that was travelling not towards the Atlantic Ocean, but towards the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, towards a large sedimentary basin called the Cenozoic Douro Basin. These rocks document the headwaters of a river system that existed for a large part of the Cenozoic, before the Douro River and the rest of today's rivers. Also noteworthy is the occurrence of small faults affecting the sediments, showing the more recent seismic activity associated with the Vilariça Fault.
