GEODIVERSITY | 11. CONRAD AND MOHO DISCONTINUITIES IN LAGOA

At the top of the slope above the river Sabor, it is possible to take a “journey” through rocks which, on the surface, reveal what normally only occurs tens of kilometers underground. In addition to unusual rocks, the Conrad and Moho seismic discontinuities can be seen at this geosite. “Seismic discontinuities” are surfaces that separate different types of materials within Planet Earth and are known for the changes they cause in the propagation of seismic waves. The Conrad Discontinuity is expressed by the contact surface between gneisses and granulites, and the Moho Discontinuity by the contact surface between granulites and peridotites.
