GEODIVERSITY | 08. MORAIS FAILURE

The Morais Fault, which runs for more than 20 km, can be seen on the slopes of the road between Chacim and Paradinha de Morais. The fault establishes an abrupt contact between the amphibolites of the ancient Galicia Trás-os-Montes ocean and the shales of the margins of the ancient continent of Gondwana. By promoting the tectonic subsidence of the southeastern part of the municipality, this fault has made it possible to preserve the rocks from the ancient continent of Armorica, which form the top of the Morais Massif sequence, from erosion.
