GEODIVERSITY | 30. LIMESTONES OF ALTO DA CARRASQUEIRA

To the south of the village of Vale da Porca, in a place known as ‘Alto da Carrasqueira’, limestone rocks can be seen, similar to those that occur on the coast and south of Portugal, but rare in the northern interior. These rocks, which were formed around 420 million years ago, come from an ancient ocean, which today would resemble a tropical sea. This small outcrop, like the outcrop at the Calcários de Salselas geosite (G16), was exploited by the people of Salselas and Vale da Porca to produce lime.
