NATURAL PATRIMONY | 07. ALBUFEIRA DO AZIBO PROTECTED LANDSCAPE

The Albufeira do Azibo Protected Landscape covers almost 4,897 ha and is part of the Natura 2000 Network thanks to its harmonious combination of ecosystems, culture and leisure. Built in the late 1970s for irrigation and supply, the reservoir has formed a vibrant ecosystem: it is now home to migratory birds such as the emblematic great crested grebe, mallard ducks, herons and cormorants, as well as reptiles such as the Mediterranean terrapin and mammals such as otters, foxes and even the occasional wolf
The flora is the result of a mosaic of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences: black and cerquinho oaks, chestnut trees, cork oaks, holm oaks, olive trees and dozens of endemic orchids linked to the Morais Massif, whose ultra-rich soils favour rare species of high natural value.
