MUSEUMS | 05. MARTIM GONÇALVES DE MACEDO MUNICIPAL MUSEUM

This museum, a first in Portugal, both because of some of the pieces it displays, the realism of the representations and the extraordinary didactic nature of the exhibits, celebrates Portuguese nationality and pays homage to the heroic deed of Martim Gonçalves de Macedo at the Battle of Aljubarrota, on 14 August 1385, which would establish Portugal as an independent and sovereign state.
Martim Gonçalves de Macedo was a hero in the Battle of Aljubarrota, which put an end to the crisis of succession to the Portuguese throne and warded off Castilian ambition between 1383 and 1385. The life of the Master of Avis is due to him. It was the Macedonian nobleman who dealt a fatal blow to the Castilian who was preparing to do the same to the future King João I, when he lost his weapon.
