MUSEUMS | 03. REAL FILATÓRIO DE CHACIM

A building whose construction dates back to the Modern period (15th to 18th centuries). Dating from 1788, it is a unique example of the industrialisation of sericulture in Trás-os-Montes and one of the few monuments to bear witness to this activity in the country. It was during the reign of King Maria I that sericulture took on a greater dimension, especially in the region of Trás-os-Montes - one of the most favourable for planting mulberry trees, the silkworm's main food. This factory used the Redondo Silk Mill, a spinning technology from Italy that had been perfected since the 14th century - Fiação à Piemontesa - introduced by the Arnaud family. The ruins reveal the grandeur of this work and the impact it had on the town and the whole of the north-east of Trás-os-Montes. The Real Filatório de Chacim is around ten metres high and has three floors. 57 looms, eight lathes and a Piedmontese machine were installed in the factory, which employed hundreds of people in the 19th century.
