GEODIVERSITY | 26. LIMESTONES OF SALSELAS

In the village of Salselas there are traces of an old limestone quarry. Limestones are very common rocks on the coast and in the south of Portugal, but are rare in the northern interior. The small limestone outcrop between Salselas and Vale da Porca was formed on the shores of the ancient Rheic Ocean around 420 million years ago! That ocean resembled a tropical sea today, with shallow depths and calm, warm waters, favourable conditions for the formation of these rocks.
